It’s hard picking long-term winners in the ever-changing retail sector

Britain’s high streets are in a sorry state. A short walk around Norwich city centre a few weeks ago revealed a rather grim picture of an otherwise ancient and splendid City – several thousand square feet of vacant Top Shop, another few thousand square feet of vacant Debenhams and a plethora of smaller shops, bars and restaurants long boarded up.

After the week began with an eyewatering November inflation reading which showed CPI hitting 5.1%, the big news has been that the Bank of England shocked everyone once again by actually raising the benchmark interest rate by 15 basis points to 0.25%. After totally wrong-footing everyone in the previous month by not raising rates when universally expected, perhaps observers were simply taking a more cautious approach to predicting what the MPC might do next. Either way, lots of pundits remain unamaused by the Old Lady's antics.

Is boohoo’s margin squeeze a temporary blip?

Investors are running away from boohoo shares. Some are clearly frightened that there is more bad news to come. If its margin squeeze is temporary and can be contained then then this week's sell off could present an opportunity as the shares are arguably not expensive on revised forecasts.

boohoo is a company which divides opinion. To some it is an ambitious and aggressive operator with great potential. To others, it is a business in the murky world of fast fashion which they don’t feel comfortable about.

The company’s publicity in this area has not been great and it has been working hard to reassure people. I think it’s fair to say that there may be some work still to do on this.
